This is no way for animals to live. But this is how chickens spend their lives when they are produced by the millions. So instead of having a live in a small cage, when you raise your own chickens they have a life, and are able to run around and be chickens.

And I also feel it is important for myself, and my family to know where our food comes from. And although butchering the chickens isn’t my favorite part, in order to have food it needs to be done. I feel it gives me a respect for the food I have, and also I understand where my food comes from.

Butchering chickens isn’t for everyone, and if you choose to only have hens that’s great! You are taking one step closer to being more self-reliant, and living more responsibly. I am not going to get into the actual deed of butchering and processing chickens here. There are many books and even videos available to watch on YouTube that walk you through the process. This is actually how we learned how to do it for the first time. It isn’t glamorous, or something I would like to do every day, but I know how to do it now, so when it has to be done, I can do it. I hope one day you can say the same thing.

Although butchering and processing chickens is a harder topic to end this chapter on, it is a very important aspect of being more self-reliant and growing your own food. Now that you know a little more about chickens, I advise you to map out your plan for getting chickens and getting started with raising them. The more information you have, and the more you prepare for, the better of you and your family will be. So now it’s time to get out there and get your own chickens!
